There are some possible drawbacks that parents need to consider before deciding to drug-test their kids. Generally, there are two reasons that parents consider home drug testing: as a preventive measure or as an investigative tool. As a Preventive Measure If you are considering using home drug testing as a preventive step, you are probably working on the theory that if your children know they are going to be tested on a regular basis, they will be less likely to do drugs. The problem with that theory is that it is not backed up by any scientific research showing that it works. In fact, one study conducted with 943 high school students showed that random drug testing of children at school had little effect on lowering the percentage of drug and alcohol users.??? Home Tests Can Be Circumvented Another problem with the prevention theory is the fact that there is no one drug test that you can give that will test for all of the possible drugs your children might be using. If you are testing for one set of drugs, they could switch to another kind of drug, while your test would show they were not using drugs at all. Is Your Teen Using Drugs? Although many of these home tests use methods to test the validity of the sample, there is also the problem that there are ways to potentially cheat on drug tests. We wont list them here for obvious reasons, but if your child is involved in illegal drug use or has access to the internet, he can find them. This may leave you with a false sense of security in thinking your child is not using. As an Investigative Tool If you are considering using a home drug test for investigative purposes, chances are you have noticed a change in your childs behavior or attitude, and you think it may be due to drug use. You want to use the test to find out if you are right. The problem with using home drug tests to investigate your childrens possible drug use is that home testing alone does not really accomplish much by itself. Even those who advocate the use of drug tests for children at school and home warn that it is important to couple the testing with a complete assessment and treatment plan. Testing Not a Stand-Alone Response According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse,??? drug testing should never be done as a stand-alone response to a drug problem. The American Academy of Pediatricians (AAP),??? which does not advocate home drug testing, agrees that adequate resources for assessment and treatment must be available if your children do fail a drug test. If a child fails a drug test, it should lead to early intervention and treatment, not merely punitive measures alone. According to the AAPs policy statement?? on drug-testing children and adolescents, there just might not be developmentally appropriate adolescent substance abuse and mental health treatment programs available in your community if your child is using. In general, adult-focused programs may be inappropriate and ineffective for adolescents. Damaging Your Relationship There is one other important drawback for parents considering home drug testing their children: the possibility of damaging your relationship with your child. Testing for drug use at home, with or without the consent of the adolescent, could seriously undermine the parent-child relationship. Teens could perceive forced home drug testing by their parents to be invasive and a violation of their rights. You are not the police, and that really is not the role you want to be playing in your childs life. It could damage your relationship and bond, leading to other behavioral problems. What Steps Do You Take? If you are concerned that your children may be using drugs or alcohol, take them to their primary care physician or other healthcare professionals for a professional assessment. If your child has become involved in substance abuse, the healthcare professional will know what resources are available to provide the child with intervention or treatment services. If your child does require professional treatment or rehabilitation, be sure to find a facility or program that has experience in the treatment of adolescents, if possible. What works for adults may not work well for teens. What Parents Should Know About Drug Testing and Screening for Teens

Iago was determined to get the rank he thought he truly deserved and wasn’t going to stop until he got it, no matter who got hurt. Throughout the story Iago managed to manipulate and feed off of the character’s weakness; Othello’s insecurities, Cassio’s trust, and Roderigo’s naivety. The first victim of Iago’s manipulation is Roderigo, because Roderigo is in love with Desdemona; this made it easy for Iago to add Roderigo into his plan. With Roderigo being so naà ¯ve, he shares his riches with Iago thinking it will help him get Desdemona but instead Iago takes it for himself saying â€Å"Thus do I ever make fool my purse† (I.iii.374) Iago takes the opportunities to make money, when he realizes that Rodrigo is desperate. Introduction to Law Free Essays

Wherever people have lived together, they have found it necessary to develop rules of conduct. They need rules for the settlement of disputes. They also need rules for the organization of their governments. We will write a custom essay sample on Introduction to Law or any similar topic only for you Order Now Law is the set of rules that the government enforces through its police, its courts, and its other agencies. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee demonstrates the importance of law in our communities, especially criminal law. Law makes it possible for men to live together peaceably in a community. If there were no law, every man could do just as he pleased, with law, the people in a community know that the government will enforce rules that will make it possible for them to live together without conflict. The philosophy or science of law is called jurisprudence. There are two main kinds of laws. Civil or public law helps settle disputes between people or companies. Criminal law deals with crimes, or actions that cause serious harm to an individual or group. Public law is the body of rules in which the government is directly involved. Public law regulates the relationships between individuals and the government. One group of rules in public law defines and limits the powers of the government. The part of public law most familiar to many persons is criminal law, which is the body of rules that we are commanded to obey. The government may fine those who do not obey, send them to jail, or even execute them. A number of smaller groups of rules also come under the general heading of public law. International law is concerned with agreements among nations, problems of boundaries, and other questions arising from the relationships of one country with another. Constitutional law deals with the problems that have arisen about various clauses in the United States Constitution. Problems in constitutional law include the organization of the government and the guarantees of our liberties. Administrative law is the body of rules made by administrative or executive agencies of government. The Interstate Commerce Commission, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the Federal Communications Commission are all examples of such an agency. Civil law includes the rules that regulate the relationships among people. Private law includes many smaller groups of rules. Some examples are the rules relating to contracts, personal injuries, and real estate. Most people think of only criminal law when they hear the word law. However, most lawyers and courts spend most of their time dealing with problems of private law. These private law problems includes taxation, business affairs, the transfer of property, and the collection of money for people injured through the fault of others. Cases or proceedings in civil courts are often called lawsuits. Social conditions continually change, and so the law must also change or become outdated. Every nation changes its laws in the manner that its political system prescribes. In a dictatorship, only the top government leaders can change the law. Democracies, however, have developed four main methods of changing the law. Democratic laws change by court decision, by legislation, by administrative action, and by the direct action of the people. Every independent country has its own legal system. The systems vary according to each country’s social traditions and form of government. However, most systems can be classed as either a common-law system or a civil-law system. The United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and other English-speaking countries have a common-law system. Most other countries have a civil-law system. Many countries combine features of both systems. Law enforcement is one of the most important ways a government has of protecting its citizens. It usually refers to the action of police and the courts in catching and punishing criminals. However, a broad use of the term also includes the administration of justice in all law cases by the courts. Law enforcement is necessary to maintain order in a community, state, or country. Private citizens have more to do with law enforcement than simply obeying the laws. They should report to the authorities whenever they see a law being broken. Every citizen has the right to arrest a person he sees committing a crime. In conclusion, law is one of the most basic social institutions and one of the most necessary. No society could exist if all people did just as they pleased, without regard for the rights of others, nor could a society exist if its members did not recognize that they also have certain obligations toward one another. The law thus establishes the rules that define a person’s rights and obligations. The law also sets penalties for people who violate these rules and states how government shall enforce the rules and penalties. How to cite Introduction to Law, Papers

Using Named Examples, Assess the Effectiveness of Technologicy free essay sample

Leapfrogging involves the technical aspects of implementing new technologies in the existing technological environments, involving the economic, including financial aspects, the power and broader social interests related to existing and new technology systems, and a wide range of other socio-economic factors. Mobile phones are frequently held up as a good example of technologys ability to decrease the development disparity between MEDC’s and LEDC’s. In the economically lower developing world places with poor infrastructure, few forms of transport and dangerous land lines; mobile phones substitute for travel, allow price data to be distributed more quickly and easily, enabling traders to reach wider markets and generally make it easier to do business. The mobile phone is a prime example of a â€Å"leapfrog† technology: it has enabled developing countries to skip the fixed-line technology of the 20th century and move straight to the mobile technology of the 21st. In Afghanistan, the countrys landline network has been torn to bits by 20 years of war. We will write a custom essay sample on Using Named Examples, Assess the Effectiveness of Technologicy or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page What is left is now out of date and extremely unsafe. To put new wires in the ground would take decades and be prohibitively expensive. Instead, installing a modern mobile phone network is cheaper, quicker and easier. From having limited phones, the wealthy Afghan people are using one of the latest western communications devices. When the mobiles first went on sale in Afghanistan earlier in the year, nearly 400 people have spent $350 for a handset in order to stimulate their businesses or simply to increase their social life. Although the mobile phone technology is cheaper, it is still quite costly and only the rich citizens of the nation’s poverty stricken population can afford the technology. Therefore it is only benefiting the wealthy, who probably could have afforded to repair the landline technology. The term GM food are most commonly used to refer to crop plants created for human or animal consumption using the latest molecular biology techniques. These plants have been modified in the laboratory to enhance desired traits such as increased resistance to herbicides or improved nutritional content. Genetically modified plants have been widely publicised as the future in agriculture. Many believe that it may help improve crop harvests and farm productivity by developing genetically modified crops that can either resist pests or chemicals. But despite the promise that GM crops may offer, there are still doubts that linger among a number of people as well. There are concerns that the introduction of GM crops in developing countries might lead to a reduction in biodiversity, particularly in areas where a crop originated and a wide range of natural genetic variation is found. There might also be unexpected consequences of gene transfer (between plants, for example an uncontrollable ‘escape’ of genes into neighbouring wild plants by pollen. There are also concerns that pests or weeds could acquire resistance to crops. Therefore their effectiveness is questioned and would probably hinder the development process, as developing countries would have to deal with further environmental issues. Furthermore, five agricultural biotechnology corporations now control most of the technology needed to develop GM crops. There are concerns that these companies and those who own property rights have undue influence over the availability of GM crops and the research involved currently only serves the interests of large-scale farmers in developed countries meaning it has very little productivity for the development process – thus increasing the development gap further. However, there are benefits of GM crops that support the development process. Sub Saharan Africa, well known for its arid climate and also known for its development decline can benefit from GM crops as a technological leapfrog. A gene from a plant which can survive prolonged water stress in desert conditions has been introduced into rice, this allows rice to produce a sugar that protects the plant during dehydration, allowing it to survive periods of drought. In addition, crops can be genetically modified to contain additional nutrients that are lacking from the diets of many people in developing countries. One example is Golden Rice, which has been modified to have enhanced levels of Beta-carotene, in order to help to prevent vitamin A deficiency which 14 million children under five suffer clinically from, which can cause childhood blindness. Thus, the GM crop will assist Sub Saharan African countries with the Millennium Development Goal of eradicating poverty and hunger and general deficiency issues, which will therefore contribute to the development process. In conclusion, technological leapfrogging has assisted many developing countries to decrease development disparity with the Global North. Both the mobile phone and GM crop technologies are modern and advanced, allowing developing countries to gain economic, social and environmental benefits. Although there are some issues because it is 21st Century technology there will always be upgraded technology, which means the leapfrogging will only decrease the development gap, not actually balance the core and periphery. z
